Almost everyone walks in a little nervous for their first Brazilian. It goes faster than people expect and it’s much less awkward than they imagine, especially once you know what’s coming. Below is everything we tell first-time clients, from how long your hair should be to what to do the day after.
What a Brazilian includes
A Brazilian takes hair off the front, the back and everything in between. How much stays is up to you: all of it off, a small strip, or a shape you like. Just tell us in the room.
If you only want a clean edge where your swimsuit sits, what you want is a bikini line. Here a bikini line is $40 and a Brazilian is $70.
Before your appointment
- Let the hair grow to about ¼ inch. That’s around two to three weeks after shaving, roughly the length of a grain of rice. If it’s shorter, the hair can’t be lifted out cleanly.
- Exfoliate gently one or two days before, but not on the day itself.
- Keep retinol, acids and sun off the area for a few days beforehand.
- Come in with clean skin and no lotion or oil on the area.
- Go easy on coffee that morning, since caffeine can make your skin more sensitive.
- If you’re on your period, you can still come in. Please wear a tampon or cup.
If you’ve used Accutane in the last six months, or the skin is sunburned, broken or irritated, please reschedule.
What happens in the room
- We talk for a minute about what you’d like left, if anything, and check your skin.
- You get privacy to undress from the waist down.
- We cleanse the skin so the paste or wax can hold the hair properly.
- We work in small sections, one at a time. For first-timers we usually pick sugaring, which goes on close to body temperature and lifts out in the direction the hair grows.
- Any stray hairs get tweezed by hand.
- We finish with something to calm the skin, and you’re on your way.
Most Brazilians take well under an hour. The room is private and we never rush you.
Does it hurt?
A little, mostly the first time. Each pull is quick, and we press firmly right after to settle it. Sugaring is usually the gentlest option because it holds the hair and not the skin.
The second visit is almost always easier. With regular appointments the hair grows back finer and thinner, so there’s less to remove.
Is it awkward?
Not for us, and we do our best to make sure it isn’t for you. We do this every day. Our job is to be quick and careful, and to keep the conversation as light or as quiet as you like.
After your Brazilian
- For the first 24 hours, avoid heat, heavy sweating, hot tubs and tight clothes. Loose cotton is best.
- For 24 to 48 hours, keep the area out of the sun, and skip tanning and swimming.
- After 48 hours, start exfoliating gently two to three times a week to keep ingrown hairs away.
- Every day, keep the skin moisturized with a light, fragrance-free lotion.
Some redness right afterwards is normal, and it usually fades within a few hours.
How often should you come back?
Every four to six weeks. Results last around three to five weeks, and sticking to a schedule keeps your hair growth in rhythm, so each visit gets quicker and more comfortable.
